The soap bubble

"Sometimes you have to cut the umbilical cord. Not because you are a bad child, but because the adult of today needs it. "Dr. I. L.

I'm dragging my legs once more ... I do not know how many times I've been here, and still I cannot learn the way. It's a labyrinth with a large aisle, with identical doors on both sides. I do not see what its written on the doors, cause we're going too fast, though I feel like am standing and everything is passing by.

I'm trying to count my steps, five, six as I'm trying to tell him something while we're heading for that uncomfortable armchair that dominates the whole room. It is so weird to go so far without speaking, without smiling, not even talking about the weather, yet it seems that he is not bother by us being in silence all this time.

I cannot look at him, no, I don't dare. I'm afraid of what I could find on his face. It could be an unassailable smile stuck on his face, maybe exasperation, disinterest, or perhaps, since he has done this for such a long time, he became immune to this corridor of silence.

I don't know what I can say to him today ... I thought a lot last night about what we could talk. I always do and it hurts my mind. And he doesn't know. He doesn't care.

It all starts after we say "Hello," we smile awkwardly, then he shows me the way, as if it is the first time I was there. I don't object to this little and strange tradition, I don't think it would make sense to say anything about this now, after so much time, but I would have rather waited right there in front of the apartment's door, pushing my finger into the doorbell knob and waiting for him to open. The same false smiles, the same handshake, the same voice ... Believe me, like that it would reduce this embarrassment of both of us significantly.

Here I feel like I'm a stone, and he is constantly rolling me all over, trying to crack me, like I know a lot of things, like I have something hidden inside me, like I'm lying to him. He just needs to really look at me and see I'm not really ok, but he doesn't know how to look at the adult I am today. He wants to shake my armor and make me talk. I cannot. It is difficult...

It's so damn hard to talk when I find a knot in my throat and the tears come rushing after. I feel frightened, scared, dispensable, but he stands there, opposite me, legs crossed, wedding ring on his finger, glasses on his nose, and with a mind that has never found the right words to talk to me.

I find myself comparing the walls with the same white walls that I saw last year. I do not know why, but today I see them smaller, I feel how they approach us, they want to cover us, they want to keep our secrets inside them, they want us to end.

He stares at me for a long time ... He pours water in a plastic glass, puts it in front of me and waits for me to take it. He is waiting for me to talk. That's how it is when you stop talking to the world about important things, you do not know what's really valuable in life, you do not know exactly what made you as you are.

I drink a single mouth of water. I put then the glass on the table, next to the napkins, pushing them slightly away from me. I am trembling ... I do not like being here. The arms, body, mind are shaking me spasmodically. What if he will hurt me again?

He fits its voice, coughing. I ... tremble. I realize I'm alone in front of him again. As a huge wave his words rise over me ... It's hard to breathe, it's hard to stop from shaking. He does not notice, he never saw what effect he has over me.

For a moment I close my eyes. I see me as a child again, I see myself running and living happily in a soap bubble. I see and love my family, even though I am bothering my sister whenever I can. I'm talking, joking, and laughing with my lips to my ears. I look forward to my favorite dish with my favorite food, when my mom is next to the saucepan, serves us in turn, then she goes to eat away from us. I never question that.

I stand by my dad. He's my hero that protects me with his hard hand from all the monsters that are under my bed. When he calls me, I'm there. I run with joy towards him when he comes from work. I hug and give kisses to this person who I know now he will destroy everything ... and he will start with me.

I know the story, I can not forget it ... This man, this good man, started to be different when I was 8 years old. He's hairy, tall, thin, but his mind is agile. His hands are often clenched in fists, for he has forgotten how to comfort others. His mustache is filled with saliva when he begins to precipitate himself, to throw heavy words that weigh a ton over my head. He roars in front of us, frightens us, transforms us into nothing. He has control over us, stops our electricity, sends us to bed, stops our laughter, and puts us do chores, stops the love of our mother, threatening to kill her right in front of us.

That's where my soap bubble broke. There, when he cut off my mother's clothes, and holding the knife under her jaw, he continued to scream. There, I was incapable of understanding why my mother was crying, why she was so grotesquely spread on the white wall, why she looked so gently towards me.

I tremble, like an echo her words always appear inside me. Kill me, she told him, but take care of girls.

I  tremble, I see my little body trapped in her big and crying eyes ... I cry beside my sister and Mommy is all I can say.

I'm trembling, he's in front of me now. The same man, with the same sorrow, he is the same person today, and tomorrow, like then. He hurts us again and again, and we ... We run to any other place than returning back home. We have forgotten our roots, we forget to call, we ignore messages, we ignore the past, and yet he is reappearing from nowhere ... He destroys our daily lives, bury us in shame, sinks us as if we were children still because he is a parent, he has power and we are nothing.

He speaks. Speaks alone. Talks about being alone ... He talks a lot about it. I am silent.

He does not look at the clock, he does not look at the calendar date. He knows nothing else, it is only about him. And yet he's not sorry. He does not regret what he did, and what he does, he always has a justification.
We do not understand. We are the ones who have fled, those who do not want to return back home only for a few hours, then we disappear again ...

... Because his hand is heavy. The same hand fasten my own hand so hard, just before I manage to get out of the apartment. I always have a story prepared from home with what I have to say and how long I can stay there with him. But he follows me, on the same long corridor with the same unnamed, identical doors. We always go together to the main door. I instinctively turn my cheek for him to temporarily squeeze his harsh lips over it when he tells me, "See you soon!", smiling strangely with all his teeth. I nod ...

My cheek burns where he kissed me ... I hurry up beyond the block entrance. I miss all the years that I hoped he would change. I'm stepping up as if somebody is following me. It hurts my soul, because I can not tell him I will not see him ever again. And I wake up running as far away as possible from him, sick in another soap bubble...
